Lost or Delayed Luggage at Maurice Bishop Airport: What to Do

Bag missing at Maurice Bishop Airport? How to report delayed luggage in Grenada, what to buy meanwhile, getting the bag delivered and claiming costs back.

A family stands by an empty baggage carousel in a bright, compact Caribbean arrivals hall, a staff member in uniform helping them, wide view, soft overhead light

The carousel stops, the last bags are lifted off, and yours is not among them. At a small airport like Maurice Bishop International, where many passengers arrive on connecting itineraries, this happens more often than travellers expect. Most delayed bags turn up within a day or two, usually on the next flight from the same hub. Very few are lost for good.

What you do in the next twenty minutes, before you walk through customs, decides how smoothly the bag reaches you and how easily you can claim back what you spend in the meantime. This page covers the report, the follow-up, what to buy while you wait, the delivery question, and the claim. It also covers the preparation that makes a missing bag a nuisance rather than a disaster.

Before you leave the baggage hall

Do not walk out into arrivals assuming you will sort it out later by phone. Once you have passed customs, getting back into the baggage area is difficult, and the report is far easier to file in person.

  1. Find the airline's baggage service agent or desk in the baggage hall. At a small airport this may be a handling agent representing several airlines rather than your carrier's own staff.
  2. File a missing baggage report, often called a Property Irregularity Report. Give your baggage tag number, which is on the sticker the check-in agent put on your boarding pass or ticket wallet.
  3. Describe the bag accurately: colour, brand, size, hard or soft shell, wheels, ribbons or straps, and a few distinctive items inside.
  4. Give your local address in Grenada in full, including the area and any landmark, plus a phone number that works on the island and an email address.
  5. Ask for a copy of the report and the file reference. Photograph it as well. Every later conversation, with the airline or your insurer, starts with that reference.
  6. Ask how the bag will be returned: delivered to your accommodation, or held at the airport for you to collect, and whether customs clearance will require you to be present.

The first twenty-four hours

Most delayed bags arrive on the next service from the hub where they went astray. On daily routes from Miami, New York or London, that means the same time the following day. On regional routes that do not fly every day, it can take longer. The airline's worldwide baggage tracing system will show where the bag is once it has been scanned; ask the agent whether you can track the file online with the reference and your surname.

If you have heard nothing by the evening of the next day, contact the airline using the details on the report. Be polite and specific: reference number, flight, the date the bag was missing and your current address. Keep a short log of each contact, with the date, time and what was said. It makes any later claim straightforward.

Tell your accommodation about the missing bag. Hotel front desks and villa managers are used to receiving delivered luggage and can take it in if you are out. Give them the file reference so they can deal with the courier or airline if needed.

What to buy while you wait, and where

Keep it to essentials. Airlines and insurers typically reimburse reasonable interim expenses for delayed baggage, such as toiletries, underwear, a change of clothes and swimwear. Luxury purchases are unlikely to be covered. Keep every receipt and photograph them in case the paper fades.

Shopping close to the airport. The Grand Anse area, a few minutes from the airport and from most south-coast hotels, has supermarkets, pharmacies and shopping plazas selling clothing, beachwear and toiletries. St George's has a wider range of small shops but takes longer to reach.

Medicines. If prescription medicines were in the checked bag, go to a pharmacy with your prescription or a note of the generic drug name and dose. Some medicines may need a local prescription from a doctor; pharmacists in Grenada can advise.

Dive and snorkel gear. Dive shops on the south and west coasts rent masks, fins, wetsuits and full equipment, so a missing gear bag need not cancel a booked dive. Tell the operator the day before.

Do not overspend early. If the airline expects to deliver the next day, buy for a day or two. You can always buy more if the delay lengthens.

Delivery or collection: what to expect

Some airlines arrange delivery of delayed bags to your accommodation through a local courier or the ground handling agent. Others ask passengers to collect the bag from the airport once it arrives. Practice varies by airline and sometimes by the time of day the bag lands, so ask clearly when you file the report rather than assuming.

Delayed bags arriving on an international flight still need to clear Grenada Customs. In some cases the airline's agent handles this; in others you may be asked to come to the airport to be present when the bag is inspected. If you are staying near the airport in Grand Anse, Lance aux Epines or True Blue, collection is a short taxi ride. From the north or east of the island, it is a much bigger journey, so press for delivery and ask whether the taxi cost of collecting can be reimbursed.

If you are flying on to Carriacou, tell the agent. A bag that reaches Maurice Bishop after you have left needs a domestic connection to Lauriston Airport or a place on the ferry, and that adds a day or more. Some travellers decide to wait for the bag on the main island before continuing.

Claiming costs back

For international journeys, the Montreal Convention sets the framework for airline liability for delayed, damaged and lost baggage, and most of the routes into Grenada fall under it. Under the Convention, a written complaint about delayed baggage must reach the airline within twenty-one days of the date the bag was handed back to you; for damage, the limit is seven days from receipt. Do not let these deadlines slip because the holiday is busy.

Submit the claim to the airline that operated the final flight, or to the airline that sold the ticket; either can generally deal with it. Include the file reference, a copy of the report, your boarding passes, and itemised receipts for what you bought. If the bag is declared lost, usually after a set number of days of tracing, the claim changes to a lost baggage claim, and you will be asked for a list of contents and their value.

Travel insurance may cover delayed baggage too, sometimes paying a fixed amount after a number of hours. Many policies expect you to claim from the airline first, and they will want the same documents. Read your policy before you buy anything significant.

Packing so a missing bag does not matter much

A delayed bag is an inconvenience for someone who planned for it and a crisis for someone who did not. These habits make the difference on any trip involving a connection.

  • Pack a swimsuit, one change of clothes, sunscreen, a basic toiletry kit and sleepwear in your hand luggage.
  • Carry all prescription medicines, glasses, contact lenses and chargers in the cabin.
  • Keep valuables, documents, your driving licence and any car-hire paperwork out of checked bags.
  • Put a copy of your itinerary and your Grenada address inside each checked bag, in case the outside tag is torn off.
  • Photograph the bag and its contents before you leave home; it speeds up both the report and any claim.
  • Consider a small tracking tag inside the bag, so you can show the airline where it last was.
  • When booking, leave long enough at the connecting hub for bags as well as people to make the transfer.

Frequently asked questions

Where is the baggage desk at Maurice Bishop International Airport?

Delayed baggage is reported in the baggage reclaim hall, before customs, to the airline's baggage service agent or the handling company representing it. Report the missing bag there in person before you leave, and ask for a copy of the report with its reference number.

How long do delayed bags usually take to reach Grenada?

Most arrive on the next flight from the hub where they were left behind, often within about twenty-four hours on daily routes. On regional routes that do not operate daily, the wait can be longer. The file reference lets you follow progress with the airline.

Will the airline deliver a delayed bag to a hotel in Grenada?

Some airlines arrange delivery through a local courier or handling agent, and others ask passengers to collect from the airport after the bag clears customs. Practice varies, so ask when filing the report and give a full local address and a working phone number.

What can be claimed for a delayed bag?

Reasonable essentials bought while waiting, such as toiletries, underwear, a change of clothes and swimwear, are commonly reimbursed if you keep itemised receipts. Expensive or non-essential purchases may be refused. Check both the airline's policy and your travel insurance before spending much.

Is there a deadline for delayed baggage claims?

Under the Montreal Convention, which covers most international journeys, a written complaint about delayed baggage must reach the airline within twenty-one days of getting the bag back. Damage must be reported within seven days. File promptly and keep copies of everything submitted.
